... I LIVE IN AYALA ALABANG?
Snob? Asshole? Nouveau Riche? Idle rich? Coño? Mayabang? Uy, hingan natin ng pera? Friend?
Unless you also reside in the same village, or have close ties with some people from within, everyone always has something unpleasant to say. And the thing is, they don't need to say a word for you to know what they're thinking.
"Ah," or "Oh," or even just dead silence says it all. There are times, when asked where i live, that i feel uneasy about telling them where i actually reside because from personal experience, i have had people literally turn their backs on me or give me snide remarks. Now, depending on who is asking, I hesitate, anticipate and just give a vague description of the general area so as not to alienate myself. This happens everytime.
I once took a short Education course in some small College along the Alabang Service Road area. It was run by public school teachers and my classmates were all minimum wage folk who had aspirations of being teachers in America. I wanted to be a licensed teacher because I believe that education is the best solution to all the country's woes. For the first two weeks i managed to sort of blend in with the crowd. Together we all shared the xeroxing bills for the chop-suey textbooks the school lent, did all our homework and research together, and even shared our baon. The only thing that made me stick out a bit was the fact that i had my own transportation - a pickup that, to me, didn't look too conspicuous. A couple of classmates got curious enough to snoop on my vehicle and noticed the residential sticker on the windshield.
"Taga Ayala Alabang ka pala," declared one of them, and word got around really fast. Soon enough, i started getting comments like "Hoy, manlibre ka naman, mayaman ka pala eh!" Another person said "Wow, ano'ng ginagawa mo dito eh hindi mo naman kailangan magtrabaho?" And there were several who never spoke to me again.
So what's with the address? Unlike Forbes, Dasma, Valle Verde and the rest, Ayala Alabang bears a stigma. Why is that? What does it represent?
Let me tell you what it represents to ME:
1. The quality of life that my late father aspired for and, through sheer hard work and determination, achieved - He was born in Nueva Ecija to a clerk and a woman who sold bakyas and alpombras at the palengke. He was an honest, quiet man who kept mostly to himself, his wife and three children and worked tirelessly to provide for them and to be in his Creator's good graces.
2. The need to work just as hard to maintain everything that he worked so hard for - in short, to be just like him or even better.
3. That there is so much in this world to aspire for, and that I should never be complacent - hindi puwede ang "puwede na."
I am my father's child, i am my mother's child. I am blessed, fortunate and driven to succeed.
I am grateful and more importantly,
Puta, coño, Jake, pare, I live in Ayala Alabang!
 | Wow, looks like there's more that education needs to address over the 3Rs. It's nice to hear that Social Stigmata is alive and well.
Dude, stigmata, pare. Friamos asparago cono!
|
 | Shet pare, heaaaaaaaavy.
I guess these are the important things to realize: 1) Man should not be judged based on what he owns or does not own, but of who he is in spite of these. 2) Only an Alabanger can think that Dasma and Forbes don't have a "Rich" stigma. 3) Ayala Alabang should not have a stigma simply because rich people live there, but rather because of its high ratio of pretty girls per square meter.
So pwede ba tayong mag walking walking dyan sa inyo? haha. |
 | I have a story about this person I knew whom I felt "embraced" the stigma of "living in Alabang" for it connotes the fact that he is a rich person, cono, whatever..then I eventually I found out he lives in BF!!! What gives? and the funny part is he isn't underprivileged at all...pretentious lang siya at parang hindi naman niya alam na eventually I will find out! Ang bobo!!! See Jay, there are people naman who aspire & pretend to live there...so it's not all bad comments! :)
Anyway, I never owned a residence in Alabang or Dasma, but having grown up with my paternal grandparents (my lola calls me her youngest) from birth to early adulthood. I have lived in both villages, spending 18 years in the latter. I have to say though, when they moved to Alabang (sad as we were to leave Dasma) - I liked the change and I think I made more friends there or I felt that people were less judgmental and are more down to earth. And talagang masarap mag-walking at biking! Hahaha! Nung-bata ako pinapagalitan ako if I cross from inside Dasma to Forbes on my bike! :) |
 | Ang labo talaga ng ibang tao.
Well, i'm not complaining. I'm just scratching my head at the way some people react. It's mostly a result of their own insecurities and pretentiousness, I guess. And maybe you really can't blame the others because there are people who give us a bad name.
And regarding that social stigma:
Shet, pare, we're so kawawa naman, dude! |
 | Uy pare, i'll be in the south again this weekend :-) taking a friend out. I'll explain when i see you :-) Hopefully, we can meet up :-) mwah mwah!! Or at the very least, I'll bring your DVDs!! :-)
And to answer you're question, when I hear the words "I live in Ayala Alabang," first thing that comes to mind is..."ay, ang layo." ;-) |
 | hilarious! now i want to know which item on your list best describes me (or the company i keep - almost all of you live in alabang!) because everyone else thinks i live there, too: Snob? Asshole? Nouveau Riche? Idle rich? Coño? Mayabang? Uy, hingan natin ng pera? Friend? teka...bakit walang nakaisip ng "bitch"? ang turing pa naman sa akin ng mga tao sa office ay "ingliserang sosyal". but riddle me this, batman: why is it that "ayala alabang" bears a different stigma to "alabang hills"? |
 | AAVA is the best village for me which I later realized.. My case Jay is somewhat extreme...coz I experienced all the best that life could offer on that village... I also did find out my true friends after AAVA.. now I am a vagabond..parang wherever I may roam ng Metallica..hahahaa!! : ) |

 | frawy wrote on Jun 20, '07 Walang problema yan. See you in 5 weeks...magdala ka ng Alabang girlz. |
 | jay, i can so, like, relate!
first year college: blockmate 1: where do you live? me: alabang. blockmate 1: diba sa may bundok na yun?
that was the funniest (QC child kasi). if i'm not going to hang around the person long enough, i just say muntinlupa, para wala ng stress. if i have to say alabang, i say "my parents' house". pawis naman nila talaga yun, i just happened to be born.
 | well said jay well said
yang stigmahan na yan...nakakahawa may stigma na dumadapo sa labas at mayroon naman yung kumakapet sa loob... bago maging acute yan (inside and out) eh mabute nang magpaimmune! parang yung gamot na may benom nung cobra in small dosage baga. para khebs nalang yung mga cobra bites...
better yet...magpatayo ng snake farm! tapos magiging ayala alabang 2 after a couple of years... asus |
 | of course i mean acute as opposed to a cute... asus |

 | I also went through being called cono just for residing near that area. 1st year college when i told people i was from zobel one of them said: "so taga alabang ka? so Cono ka?"
Demm... This is a well written and well thought-out entry man.

Ang refrain mo: Shit, cono, jake, man, labo naman! |
 | jayignacio wrote on Jun 22, '07, edited on Jun 22, '07 Magandang discussion ito sa sunod na blog. That's the other thing - everyone thinks that that word is just a word, and they have no idea about its etymology.
Like Frawy said, it is the cussword mostly used by Filipinos of Spanish descent but for some reason, maybe because of wannabe-aspirations, the non-Spanish fools adopted themselves forcefully in to that society and now they're the pussies. |
 | just read this now...you have inspired me to write a new blog:
what comes to mind when you hear that your rugged television producer is from "The Ateneo"?
Sa susunod, Jake! Pwotah! |
